Now that we’re firmly in the middle of winter, many of us are finding ourselves very thankful for our home heating. And this winter may be one that we’re grateful for our home heating in particular as we are likely looking at below-average temperatures compared to recent years despite the possibility of less snowfall. This is a result of La Niña conditions which often create colder weather in the northeast.
Knowing we’re going to be depending on our home heating to be working smoothly this winter and into the early spring, it’s important to be aware of how much oil we have in our heating tanks. One of the most crucial aspects of this is making sure we’re properly reading how much oil is left in our tank to properly access when to get it refilled. So how do we know how much heating oil we have in our tank?
How Do I Know How Much Heating Oil I Have Left in My Tank?
Reading an oil tank’s gauge can be more complicated than you’d think. Many oil tanks utilize a floating gauge to approximate how much oil is in your tank at any given time. Because of the nature of a floating gauge, the measurements are never precise. You can get a good idea if your oil tank is full, three-quarters full, half full, a quarter full, or empty. If you notice your gauge has your tank at a quarter full, it is time to refill it. If you use a reliable service to maintain your home HVAC you are more likely to know when to expect needing an oil delivery.
Can I Check My Heating Oil Without a Gauge?
It may be possible to check the heating oil in your tank without a gauge, but it’s not necessarily recommended. In some instances, you may actually be able to dip a stick or narrow rod in from the top of the tank if there’s a location to do so in and see how far up the oil goes on the stick. Again, while this is possible, it is not recommended. If you do not have a gauge in your heating oil tank, it may be time to get one or to have a new oil tank installed by HVAC professionals.
