Does Heating Oil Evaporate?
While seemingly hard to credit, heating oil can evaporate. This usually only happens when temperatures are extraordinarily high, with heatwave conditions usually being required to reach those temperatures. We have good and bad news for you in terms of whether heating oil evaporates.
First, the bad news – sadly, heatwaves are becoming more the norm than the exception. Extreme temperatures have already started to roast the nation. For instance, Caribou, Maine just issued its first ever excessive heat warning by the National Weather Service, and in the Gulf of Mexico, the temperatures were a driving force behind Beryl, the first ever Category 5 Hurricane to form this early in the season.
Depending on where you are and what the weather holds, you could possibly see temperatures spike that high, although hopefully not for long. Luckily, there is some good news – the rate of evaporation is extremely slow compared to water, so the likelihood of losing a significant amount of your heating oil is slim.
What Temperature Makes Heating Oil Evaporate?
It takes a temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit to reach the vapor point for most heating oil. Twenty degrees higher, at 160 degrees Fahrenheit, it reaches its ignition point. An interesting thing that most people don’t realize is that heating oil in its liquid state won’t combust. You could throw a lit match into a pan of heating oil, and it would not light. (Doing this is not advised since any vapor buildup in the area can produce dangerously explosive results.)
