It’s April, and we all know that day is coming: It’s the day you realize the weather is too warm to rely on open windows to keep your home cool, and it’s time to boot up the air conditioner. Before that day arrives, we recommend you do some basic HVAC prep to make sure your system is ready for warmer weather.
How Do I Get My HVAC Ready for Summer?
Before you restart your air conditioner for the first time in the spring, take care of these seven basic maintenance tasks (and always follow your unit’s manufacturer’s recommendations). If you’re not comfortable doing some of these chores, the pros at Express C.O.D are here to help you get your air conditioning unit ready for summer.
- Clean around the unit: Clear away any trash or yard debris that may have settled around the unit over the winter.
- Remove cover: Few people who protect their A/C unit over the winter forget to remove the cover, but that number isn’t zero. Starting up a covered unit can cause serious, expensive damage.
- Clear condenser: Turn off power at the unit’s shutoff box. Remove the cover and clean the fins with a soft-bristled broom or vacuum attachment. If the unit’s manufacturer recommends it, spray with a hose and a gentle cleaning product like Simple Green. You may wish to have a professional handle this step.
- Clear vents: Remove any leaves, twigs, or other debris that can block airflow through your unit’s vents.
- Check filters: Ensure indoor filters are clean and properly placed.
- Test thermostat: Change the batteries in your thermostat and turn it on to see if the fan and cooling unit kick in.
- Schedule professional maintenance: A skilled technician can test your system to be sure everything is operating optimally. We advise an annual HVAC system checkup so you can nip any issues in the bud and prevent an unpleasant surprise in even hotter weather.
