Is It Condensation or a Leak Under My Heat Pump?

heat pump leakDuring the winter, we rely on our climate control systems, which for many includes the use of a heat pump. Rather than producing heat, a heat pump moves it from one place to another, allowing it to fill the places of both a heater and an air conditioner.

Should an Air Source Heat Pump Be Dripping Water?

Due to the heat exchange process used in heat pumps, a certain amount of condensation is not unusual or an indication of problems. It is something that should be checked periodically to make sure that excess water is not being produced, which can be problematic.

The reason for normal levels of condensation varies by season. In the summer, when the system is in cooling mode, it is the interior air handler that produces condensation during the cooling cycle. In the winter, when the system is in heating mode, it is the condenser that does so.

Is It Normal for Heat Pumps to Leak Water Outside?

Since condensation is a side effect of a heat pump’s normal operation, spotting a potential heat pump leak is a lot trickier. Original heat pumps in temperatures below 55 F are used to produce enough condensation to cause the coils to ice over, causing the system to go into defrost mode. Old model heat pumps didn’t work as well in temperatures of 50 degrees Fahrenheit or less.

But that was the past. Venerable consumer product testing organization Consumer Reports notes that modern heat pumps can keep a home warm in temperatures as low as 29 degrees below zero, making them completely feasible for Long Island homeowners. However, Consumer Reports also notes that installation must be performed by HVAC technicians experienced with heat pumps and that most complaints about chilly houses after a heat pump is installed are found to be due to installation issues.

Why Is My Heat Pump Leaking Water?

If the system is leaking inside the home, it is often caused by blockage or obstruction of the condensate drain. In addition to water, you should also look for possible refrigerant leaks or related issues. In homes using ductless mini split heat pumps, the water can most often be explained by the pump not being completely level allowing the drainage pan to spill over.

Can a Leak in a Heat Pump Be Fixed?

While heat pump leaks can be problematic, they can be fixed. Professional servicing can repair almost all cases. In addition, keeping up with regular maintenance and servicing can help reduce the instances of leaks and other issues in the first place.
